MONCTON RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY BOUNCES BACK IN JUNE
Moncton – In June , the City of Moncton issued 173 building permits valued at $10,973,000,
bringing the year-to-date total to 550 permits for a total value of $40,426,000. The number of
permits issued in June increased compared to the same period last year, while the dollar value
decreased (143 permits valued at $15,668,000 in June 2005).
“The highlight of our June building permit report is that residential construction bounced back
compared to last year, in terms of the number of building permits issued and the dollar value”, said
Ben Champoux, Business Development Specialist with the City of Moncton. “In June 2006, the
number of residential building permits increased to 118 compared to 93 in June of last year, for a
total dollar value of more than $6,000,000, a 27.1% increase compared to the same period in
2005.” “The decline in the total dollar value of institutional, commercial and industrial construction in June
is not a concern to us, as activity in June 2005 included several major projects, such as the
construction of the Sports Dome, the Moncton Press Club, a large $4.1M building at Armour
Transportation Systems, and major investment at the Wesleyan Church”, added Champoux.
Expect our commercial building permit numbers to rise significantly over the next few months as
some major commercial projects will soon hit the ground”, concluded Champoux.
This past June, 52 commercial and industrial building permits totalling $4,504,000 were issued,
bringing the year-to-date total for commercial and industrial permits to $12,533,000.
